RioWallet is a free information tool that displays foreign exchange reference rates published by the European Central Bank. By using it you accept the terms set out below. If you do not accept them, please do not use the app.
The figures shown in RioWallet are the European Central Bank’s euro foreign exchange reference rates, obtained through the Frankfurter API. The ECB publishes these rates once per working day, at around 16:00 Central European Time.
They are published for information and statistical purposes only. They are intended as a reference point, not as a price at which currency is bought or sold.
These are not transaction rates. No bank, exchange office, card issuer or other provider is obliged to trade at them, and in practice none will.
A real exchange will cost you more. As a rough guide, expect around 0.5–2% worse than the reference rate when paying or withdrawing with a card, and considerably worse at an airport exchange desk, where margins are much wider.
You should therefore treat the figures in RioWallet as an indication of roughly what a currency is worth, not as a quote for a transaction you are about to make. For an actual price, ask your bank or the provider carrying out the exchange.
Because the ECB publishes on its own calendar, there are no new rates on weekends or on Eurosystem holidays. On those days, and at any time before the daily publication, RioWallet shows the most recent working day’s figures.
The app also stores the last rates it retrieved on your device so that it continues to work without a network connection. When you are seeing stored figures rather than freshly fetched ones, the app indicates this. The publication date of the rates is always shown beneath the base currency.
The European Central Bank quotes all of its reference rates against the euro. Rates for pairs that do not involve the euro — Romanian leu to Polish złoty, for example — are therefore derived by combining two euro rates. A derived rate may differ slightly in the last decimal from a rate quoted directly between the same two currencies, and small rounding differences of this kind are expected.
RioWallet is an information tool. Nothing it displays constitutes financial, investment, tax or legal advice, or a recommendation to carry out any transaction. It does not take your circumstances into account, and it is not a substitute for professional advice.
The app is provided “as is”, without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including as to accuracy, completeness, timeliness or availability. The rates depend on third-party sources and may be delayed, incomplete or unavailable.
To the fullest extent permitted by law, no liability is accepted for any loss or damage arising from decisions made on the basis of the figures shown, from errors or omissions in those figures, or from any interruption in the availability of the service.
RioWallet has no accounts and collects no personal data. Your selected currencies, the most recently retrieved rates and the time of that retrieval are stored locally in your own browser and are not transmitted to us or to anyone else. Clearing your browser’s site data removes them.
The app makes network requests for exchange rate data only. Those requests are subject to the terms and privacy practices of the Frankfurter API.
Exchange rate data is sourced from the European Central Bank and delivered through the Frankfurter API. RioWallet is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to the European Central Bank.
These terms may be updated from time to time. The date at the top of this page reflects the most recent revision, and continued use of the app after a change constitutes acceptance of it.
